Jelly Roll reflects on his path from juvenile detention to CMT Award winner

By Analisa Novak Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 12:17 PM EDT / CBS News Rising from the shadows to the spotlight, Jason Bradley DeFord, known as Jelly Roll, finds himself in awe of his meteoric rise within the country music industry. Once a name few knew, Jelly Roll has now etched his mark in the country music scene by securing Grammy nominations, bagging multiple People's Choice Awards, and earning three wins Sunday at the CMT Awards, including Video of the Year. I am the most average guy ever," Jelly Roll told Gayle King on "CBS Mornings" Monday, the day after his CMT wins. In a heartfelt moment during his acceptance speech for Male Video of the Year, Jelly Roll addressed those in juvenile detention, drawing from his past struggles in Tennessee with the law, including arrests for marijuana possession and attempted robbery that put him in and out of jail. As he looks forward to his first arena tour, including performances at landmark venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden, Jelly Roll contemplates just how far his dreams have come and just how much further they will go.

Rayner: I'll stand down if I've broken the law

The police investigation has been prompted by a complaint from Tory deputy chairman James Daly, who is understood to have made police aware of neighbours contradicting Ms Rayner's statement that a property, separate from her husband's, was her main residency. Police initially said there would be no investigation but Mr Daly, the MP for Bury North, complained that officers did not appear to have looked at the electoral roll and other documents, nor spoken to neighbours. The former carer was registered as living at that house, on Vicarage Road, Stockport, in Greater Manchester, on the electoral roll until she sold the property in 2015. Fresh questions for Barclay on incinerator decision

The government's own internal legal advice, seen by the BBC, had said it would be "unlawful" because the 24-hour consultation period had been "plainly inadequate" and there were "serious concerns of perceived bias". He previously told MPs that he had "delegated" the policy to another minister, which he thought was enough, but said that he had not been made "aware until later" that he "required a formal recusal". In a letter to its chief executive, Sir Mark said it was because he was "wary of committing" to giving more plants the go-ahead until officials had done more work "to consider whether there is a greater role for government to encourage investment in waste prevention", such as recycling. A spokesperson for Defra said it was "committed to reducing waste, improving recycling and meeting our net zero ambitions by sending less waste for incineration" and it was "rightly considering the need for more waste incineration facilities". Sadiq Khan launches climate plan for London

At the event in Stoke Newington on Friday, Mr Khan said he was "proud of what we've done in London to tackle air pollution and the climate crisis", but was now "determined to go even further with a new 10-point climate action plan for our city, which includes exciting new initiatives like putting solar panels on school roofs". Mr Khan warned that the environment and net zero were crucial issues on the ballot paper, saying "the choice couldn't be starker" and "London is at a crucial crossroads moment". Mr Khan told supporters his Conservative opponent Susan Hall was "a proud anti-green candidate" and claimed she had promoted climate science denial, taking "a Trumpian approach to the climate crisis" - referring to former US President Donald Trump. Green Party mayoral candidate Zoë Garbett said Mr Khan "talks big on climate issues, but you only have to take a look at what he has actually achieved to see there is very little in the way of action", citing the Silvertown Tunnel as "catastrophic not only for the environment but also air pollution in east London". "Germany’s deportation of Dr. Abu Sitta is a naked act of authoritarian censorship, more in line with the policies of dictatorships like Saudi Arabia and China than a rights-respecting democracy," Sarah Leah Whitson, the executive director of Washington-based human rights watchdog Democracy for the Arab World Now, or DAWN, said in a statement. Earlier on Friday, German Interior Ministry spokesperson Maximilian Kall told reporters in Berlin that federal security authorities had been in touch with their local counterparts in the capital "about questions of, for instance, entry bans," he said.
